It is our great pleasure to invite you to the international scientific-professional conference
CROATIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE ABROAD: EXPLORING THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

The aim of the conference is to address topics concerning Croatian diaspora issues, collective components of national identity, with a special emphasis on Croatian as a second and foreign language (HIJ) and the importance of preserving the Croatian language and culture abroad. The conference will scientifically and professionally examine issues that require an interdisciplinary approach. The goal is to bring together scientists in the fields of humanities, social sciences and interdisciplinary sciences, representatives of the executive power, teachers of the Croatian language and culture, as well as language experts in order to, with their scientific and professional presentations and papers, contribute to exploring issues of the Croatian language and culture abroad, discuss organisational, professional and cultural challenges, as well as prospects of maintaining and preserving the teaching of the Croatian language, culture and identity in Croatia and abroad.

Keynote Speakers

Vanda Babić Galić, PhD, Full Professor

Vanda Babić Galić, PhD, is a Full Professor and Scientific Advisor. She graduated in Zadar and completed her master’s and PhD in Zagreb. She worked at the University of Zadar (1992 – 2023), where she taught courses in oral literature and media. She is the author of numerous scientific books and scripts, as well as a member of editorial boards and accreditation bodies. She has been presented several awards for her contribution to science and culture. Since 2023, she has been employed in the Institute for Migration Research in Zagreb, and on 4 July 2024, she was appointed, pursuant to the Government Act, Special Advisor to the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia for issues related to Croatian national minorities, diaspora, culture and sports. Lidija Cvikić, PhD, Full Professor

Lidija Cvikić, PhD, is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Teacher Education in Zagreb, where she teaches courses in linguistics. She graduated and obtained her PhD at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, and obtained her master’s in European Education in Zagreb and Münster. Her fields of interest are applied linguistics, multilingualism and learning Croatian as a second and foreign language. She has published over 70 papers, (co)authored seven books and is active in scientific and professional projects. She is the Managing Editor of the journal Strani jezici and cooperates with institutes in the field of Croatian language and education. (More about Professor Cvikić)

Jasna Novak Milić, PhD

Jasna Novak Milić, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University, specialised in global cultures, language acquisition and bilingualism. She was the Head of Croatian Studies at that same university and TESOL lecturer at Western Sydney University. She worked as a journalist and producer with SBS Croatian and was also teaching at universities in Zagreb, Uppsala and Indiana. She is an expert in Swedish linguistics and a long-standing associate of the Summer School of Croatian Language. She completed a post-graduate study programme in Learning Design at UTS. Marko Tadić, PhD, Full Professor

Marko Tadić, PhD, is a linguist and Full Professor at the Department of Linguistics of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. He has been the Head of the Chair of Algebraic and Computational Linguistics within the same department since 2001, and an Associate Member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2008.
